A research team at CiQUS, part of the University of Santiago de Compostela, has developed a new type of catalytic material that can be turned on and off at will—an innovation that could significantly improve the efficiency, durability, and sustainability of green hydrogen production systems.
The catalyst is composed of palladium nanoparticles embedded within hollow carbon nanofibers. These nanofibers not only stabilize the palladium particles, preventing them from aggregating and degrading, but also contribute to the switching behavior.

What sets this system apart is its dynamic chemical environment, made possible by the introduction of sulfur. This allows the catalyst to transition between two states: in its active state, it facilitates hydrogen production efficiently; in its resting state, it is protected from the wear and tear typically associated with prolonged use.
“We’ve developed a catalyst that can be turned on or off as needed,” said María Giménez López, lead researcher on the project. “This opens the door to smarter, more durable systems for industrial hydrogen production.”
