When we turned our attic into a small office for my partner, we didn’t think about the window facing the neighbor’s upstairs bathroom — seriously, total line of sight. We’d both be on Zoom and just praying no one walked past over there in a towel. I tried putting up a sheet as a quick fix, which looked awful and made the room feel like a haunted loft. Then I thought about blinds, but the shape of the window is this slanted triangle, and nothing really fit it well. I didn’t want to deal with trimming a roll of film either — I’ve messed that up before on another project and ended up wasting half the material. Eventually found this site where you can literally send the measurements and shape and even upload your own design. I went with a blurred leaf photo I took on a hike, and the film came pre-cut exactly to the triangle shape, no drama. It’s been on for six months, no bubbling or corners peeling up, and the best part is it lets light in while still blocking the awkward view. My partner now says it’s her favorite spot in the house, which I honestly didn’t expect when I started looking into window fixes.

We had a similar problem in our stairwell — there’s this tall skinny window that gives a direct view into our neighbor’s backyard, and every time I walked down the stairs, I’d lock eyes with their dog or worse, their teenage son hanging out shirtless. Didn’t love that. We didn’t want to fully block the light because it’s one of the few places the house actually gets a bit of sun, but the standard options just weren’t working. I bought a roll of static cling film once, tried to cut it to size, and totally messed up the corners. It bubbled like crazy and wouldn’t stay flat, and honestly just looked cheap. That’s when I found a way to get a custom-cut windowfilm that’s actually made to your shape and even lets you send in your own image. I went with this minimal mountain design in a pale gray and they shipped it already shaped for that weird tall window. It took me maybe ten minutes to install with the little tool they give you, and it hasn’t budged since. The light still comes through, but the view both in and out is softly blocked. And it doesn’t look like a hack job — it actually adds something to the space. My advice? If the window’s a weird size or shape, skip the DIY cutting nightmare and just let someone else precision-cut it for you.

It’s kind of wild how we get used to things not working quite right in our homes — like you know something feels off, but you live with it for months or even years. Then you fix one tiny part and suddenly the whole room feels better. Makes you wonder what else you’ve just been putting up with.
